z2o Sara Zanin is pleased to present Unfolding Hope, the fourth solo exhibition by Kaarina Kaikkonen (Iisalmi, 1952), this time invited to engage with the gallery’s space at Via Alessandro Volta 34.
The exhibition presents a new series of site-specific works in which the exhibiting space becomes an integral part of the artwork itself. The architecture and memory of the place engage in dialogue with the installations, redefining the viewer’s experience. In this new body of work, Kaikkonen weaves together a poetic sensibility and ecological awareness: recycled fabrics are transformed into instruments for reflection on consumption and reuse, opening a dialogue between art and sustainability. The metamorphosis of these everyday materials into works that celebrate life, growth, and regeneration invites us to reconsider the relationship between humanity and the environment, emphasizing the need for respect and care toward the natural world.
Active since the 1980s, Kaikkonen has centered her practice on the use of discarded garments — particularly shirts, ties, and shoes — regarded as carriers of stories, memories, and traces of humanity. The artist approaches these materials with warmth and respect for their former owners: the transformed clothes preserve memory and the perception of time, holding within their fabrics and folds the experiences they have witnessed. Kaikkonen uses fabrics as brushes, capturing expressive forms and evoking meaning with the chromatic sensitivity of a painter. It feels possible to perceive the touch of the fabrics against the skin — their warmth and sense of protection — or sense how they might awaken memories of people, places, or moments from the past.
Kaikkonen’s installations merge intimacy and collectivity, transforming everyday objects into poetic devices that evoke both personal stories and social dynamics. As noted by Marina Dacci, “Kaikkonen’s strength lies in her ability to create works nourished by the fragility of intimate gestures, yet endowed with the resonance of a universal, collective voice.” The works establish a threefold dialogue — between place, artwork, and inner self — intertwining individual experience with social geography and envisioning human beings as part of a broader ecosystem, both natural and human. In this series, the twists and folds of the fabrics transform into flowers, foliage, and tufts of vegetation, linking the human experience to the vital cycles of nature.
Kaikkonen’s art carries an almost healing power: it invites viewers to recognize themselves in others, to feel part of a shared story, and to transcend the sense of estrangement often associated with contemporary art. Through her work, she thus creates spaces of belonging, listening, and connection.
Kaarina Kaikkonen is one of Finland’s most prominent artists and is internationally recognized for her ability to combine monumentality and fragility, memory and collectivity. She transforms used garments and everyday materials into installations that reshape space and our relationship with it.
