L'appuntamento is Josefina Ayllón’s first solo exhibition in Rome, the city where she lives.
Composed mostly of recent works, the exhibition project illustrates the outcomes of a constant experimentation — a daily painting practice in which the portrait is adopted as both a pictorial and sculptural device.

 

Color, in fact, is at times applied with a brush, while in other cases it is spread by hand, recalling the creative gestures typical of sculpture, and more precisely, of modeling. Its density on the canvas, however, remains unchanged, as if the very tools of the trade possessed tactile and graspable qualities. The subjects — mostly single figures set against monochromatic backgrounds that emphasize their emergence — only partially evoke specific representational types, from the historical to the sacred, taking on instead the role of “pretexts” born from the necessities of painting itself.
