z2o Sara Zanin is pleased to announce that the exedra courtyard of MAXXI L'Aquila is hosting the installation Towards Tomorrow by the Finnish artist Kaarina Kaikkonen, part of the MAXXI collection since 2012 and now redesigned for the Baroque spaces of Palazzo Ardinghelli. The work will be presented, with the participation of the artist, on Saturday 17 May at 12 noon as a preview of the major exhibition True Colors. Fabrics: Movement, Colours and Identity curated by Monia Trombetta with Chiara Bertini, Fanny Borel, Donatella Saroli, Anne Palopoli, realised with the support of CDP - Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and the patronage of the Municipality of L'Aquila, which will be inaugurated on 6 June.
The poetic and powerful installation, which was also set up with the contribution of students from the L'Aquila Academy of Fine Arts, was made with children's clothes between the ages of 0 and 5 collected in recent weeks thanks to the collaboration of local schools, Caritas, the Celestinian Movement, the association L'Armadio senza chiavi and those who responded to the call launched by the artist by donating used clothing, which thus becomes art, and is transformed into a collective work that unites past and future.
‘Children's clothes are a symbol of hope for a better future. Towards tomorrow is made with children's clothes because they are the future. In my work, they are able to look upwards, free and without superstructures, their innocence is the most powerful response to a world where uncertainty and conflict are a daily constant. We should all draw inspiration from their playful vitality, their pure hearts and their creative minds," says artist Kaarina Kaikkonen, internationally known for her large-scale sculptures made from simple materials and for her immersive installations with which she invites the public to reflect on personal experiences and connect with others through art.
Towards Tomorrow anticipates the atmospheres of True Colors: Fabrics, Movement, Colour and Identity, a major exhibition set up in the museum's spaces with works created from 2000 to the present that use fabric to construct narratives, spaces, movements and relationships. The exhibition will be inaugurated at the beginning of June and will host processual works, immersive and site-specific installations from MAXXI's collection, placing them in active contact with works on loan and new productions by international artists who employ fabric, recognising its capacity to represent the most intimate and profound identity of both individuals and entire communities. The inspiration is reinforced by the cultural context of Abruzzo in which textile art has ancient roots in the agro-pastoral economy and virtuous craftsmanship.
