"It is may that undoes me and / september too, these two / sentinels of summer: promise / and nostalgia."
Patrizia Cavalli
Promise and nostalgia seem to belong to opposite temporalities. One is directed toward what has yet to happen; the other toward what has already passed. Yet, in Patrizia Cavalli’s celebrated verse, these two conditions echo one another. May and September are thresholds. If the former radiates, as a promise, all that summer might still become, a season of freedom from the routines of everyday life, the latter still holds tightly to memory, preserving the trace, the echo of what has been. Both, in their own way, harbor a form of longing.
The works of Maddalena Pamio take shape within this ambiguous space between what has been and what might still be. At once vivid and elusive, often contained within intimate formats, they draw the viewer’s gaze toward something that feels immediately familiar and that we wish to hold onto, as though it possessed the power to awaken a deep and silent part of our experience. Like certain memories, these images retain the precision of detail while having lost the contours of their origin, as if they belonged to a memory that has always lived within us.
