Evgeny Antufiev relationship with the archaeological heritage embedded in our territory and belonging to our museums is a long-chaptered novel.

Thus, this is a fascination that Antufiev undergoes for the signal and symbolic stratification, for the profound echo of ancient stories that continue to speak to us in the halls of museums. What better synchronicity for an artist who has always explored the idea of ​​immortality and regeneration through archetypes that have accompanied human existence and imagination in an endless story?

 

In this chapter, the encounter is with the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia, an important repository of the fascinating and still mysterious for some Etruscan civilization that - as well as Antufiev’s creative process – absorbed and spread the contacts and relations with multiple civilizations (from East to West, from the Phoenicians to the Greeks, to the Carthaginians) and has created a peculiar, very close relationship with the characteristics of the individual territories in which it has been located, generating something absolutely new. Antufiev’s work transports in time and space symbolic figures that have always accompanied human existence and imagination. His ceramics as well as the bronze castings, with textures and oxidized surfaces treated with patina and particular baths, evoke ancient discoveries and resemble a "gift" found in the subsoil. The presence of a figure in transformation goes well with the Etruscan iconographic repertoire which is beautifully illustrated in the objects exhibited in the Museum of Villa Giulia. The formal outcome is intriguing, labyrinthine, absolutely unique: Antufiev’s works take on a hybrid identity, they are capable of generating assonances between different worlds and cultures, but inevitably they are filtered through the culture of the artist's country of origin, Siberia, and the Russian folk tradition in the way materials are treated.

 

To welcoming us, in the garden, a travertine obelisk, an invitation to the celebration of what cannot be swallowed by oblivion, of what cannot die. Maybe, the ultimate purpose of a museum? A small fountain in the hemicycle is a tribute to water, a key element in the passage of time and vital transformation. Arriving at the precious Nymphaeum, a terracotta vase, in dialogue with the bodies of the caryatids, evokes the female receptive principle, the origin of life and source of nourishment.


The exhibition develops from a specific wing of the museum, by grafting into its framework and creating an exchange with its current heritage. Some small interventions in the display cabinets do not interrupt the historical collections: Antufiev reinterprets the objects - originally created for functional and decorative purposes – and transforms the vision of an artefact into a work of art. Many of these objects, found in tombs as grave goods (a testimony to the importance of a rite of fundamental passage between life and death) offer a figurative repertoire comprising, above all, fantastic animals drawn from orientalising bestiaries that have the meaning of guardians of the tombs: an iconography which is strongly present in Antufiev’s formal research.

Finally, the exhibition envisions a phantasmagorical museum room created inside the museum itself: a fictitious space in which the artist stages, inside display cases and cabinets, an imaginative relationship between objects and figures, most of which are fusions and terracotta, as a tribute to the refined Etruscan craftsmanship that was expressed above all with these materials.

Celebration of Life

Evgeny Antufiev extensive research of extinct cultures and their artefacts leads his artistic practice to the creation of art objects manifesting the symbols of no time: mirrors, warriors, masks, knives and vessels hold cultural relevance for any era, therefore an ongoing dialogue between found ancient objects and newly made artistic items becomes a celebration of life, passing from earlier centuries into contemporary world and future, spreading from museum context to contemporary and future households, bonding our memories with reality of future generations.

The patterns that Evgeny draws within his practice are not becoming the constellation of objects solely: marble obelisk sharpened into space in the middle of Villa Giulia stands as another solid element on the world map of human made obelisks, adding Rome as a part of Cairo, Paris, New York, Vatican, Istanbul, Luxor, Judea obelisks constellation, connecting ancient times with rising contemporary culture.

The embodiment of new art objects into existing museum and even urbanistic environment always resets its spatial dynamics, and in Antufiev’s case, elevates it to an awakening level of synergy, which hasn’t existed before.

The artist and his world of objects incorporated in the space of Villa Giulia, historically charged with various codes and meanings, bring us to new sensations, manifesting our time as deeply connected with past and future, beautifully weaved within each other in timeless language of art.

È un lungo romanzo a capitoli il rapporto di Evgeny Antufiev con il patrimonio archeologico sedimentato nel nostro territorio e presente nei nostri musei.

Una fascinazione che Antufiev subisce per la stratificazione segnica e simbolica, per l'eco profondo di antiche storie che continuano a parlarci nelle sale dei musei. Quale migliore sintonia per un artista che da sempre esplora l'idea dell'immortalità e della rigenerazione attraverso archetipi che hanno accompagnato l’esistenza e l’immaginazione umana in una storia senza fine?

In questo capitolo l'incontro è con il Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia, importante custode dell’affascinante e per alcuni ancora misteriosa civiltà etrusca che ha saputo – così come il processo creativo di Antufiev – assorbire e metabolizzare contatti e relazioni con molteplici civiltà (da Oriente ad Occidente, dai Fenici ai Greci, ai Cartaginesi) e ha creato un rapporto peculiare, molto stretto, con le caratteristiche dei singoli territori in cui si è insediata, generando qualcosa di assolutamente nuovo. Il lavoro di Antufiev trasporta nel tempo e nello spazio figure simboliche che hanno da sempre accompagnato l'esistenza e l'immaginazione umana. Le sue ceramiche così come le fusioni, con trame e superfici ossidate e trattate con patine e bagni particolari, evocano antiche scoperte e ci appaiono come "dono" rinvenuto nel sottosuolo. La presenza di figure in trasformazione ben si sposa con il repertorio iconografico etrusco che viene splendidamente illustrato negli oggetti esposti nel Museo di Villa Giulia. L'esito formale è intrigante, labirintico, assolutamente unico: le opere di Antufiev assumono identità ibride, capaci di generare assonanze tra mondi e culture differenti, ma inevitabilmente sono filtrate attraverso la cultura del Paese di provenienza dell'artista, la Siberia, e la tradizione popolare russa nel trattamento dei materiali.

Ad accoglierci nel giardino un obelisco di travertino, un invito alla celebrazione di quel che non può essere inghiottito dall'oblio, di ciò che non può morire. Fine ultimo di un museo? Una piccola fontana, nell'emiciclo, è un omaggio all'acqua, elemento chiave dello scorrere del tempo e della trasformazione vitale. Giungendo al prezioso Ninfeo, un vaso in terracotta, in dialogo con i corpi delle cariatidi, evoca il principio recettivo femminile, origine della vita e fonte di nutrimento.

La mostra si sviluppa in un'ala specifica del museo innestandosi nella sua ossatura, creando uno scambio col patrimonio presente. I piccoli interventi nelle teche non interrompono le raccolte storiche: Antufiev reinterpreta gli oggetti – originariamente creati per scopi funzionali e decorativi – trasformando la visione di un manufatto in opera d'arte. Molti di questi oggetti rinvenuti nelle tombe a corredo funerario (a testimonianza dell'importanza di un rito di passaggio fondamentale tra vita e morte) offrono un repertorio figurativo comprendente soprattutto animali fantastici   tratti da bestiari orientalizzanti che assumono il significato di guardiani delle tombe: un’iconografia fortemente presente nella ricerca formale di Antufiev.

La mostra approda infine in una fantasmagorica sala museale realizzata all'interno del museo: uno spazio fittizio in cui l'artista mette in scena, all'interno di teche e vetrine, relazioni immaginifiche tra oggetti e figure di sua produzione, perlopiù fusioni e terrecotte, un omaggio al raffinato lavoro artigianale etrusco che si è espresso soprattutto con questi materiali.

Celebrazione della vita

 

La vasta ricerca di Evgeny Antufiev sulle culture estinte e sui loro manufatti porta la sua pratica artistica alla creazione di opere che divengono simboli senza tempo: specchi, guerrieri, maschere, coltelli e vasi assumono una rilevanza culturale per qualsiasi epoca, e dunque il fitto dialogo tra oggetti antichi trovati e oggetti artistici di nuova realizzazione si presenta come una celebrazione della vita, passando dai secoli precedenti al mondo contemporaneo e al futuro, diffondendosi da un contesto museale alle famiglie contemporanee e future, legando i nostri ricordi con la realtà delle generazioni che verranno.

I pattern visivi che Evgeny introduce all'interno della sua pratica non divengono unicamente una costellazione di oggetti: l’obelisco di marmo collocato nello spazio al centro di Villa Giulia si erge come un altro solido elemento sulla mappa del mondo fatta degli obelischi realizzati dall’uomo, aggiungendo Roma nella costellazione di obelischi del Cairo, Parigi, New York, Vaticano, Istanbul, Luxor, della Giudea, connettendo i tempi antichi con la crescente cultura contemporanea.

La materializzazione di nuovi oggetti d'arte con il preesistente contesto museale e persino con quello urbanistico, ripristina sempre le proprie coordinate spaziali, e nel caso di Antufiev, si eleva al livello di risveglio di una sinergia che non esisteva prima.

L’artista e il suo mondo di oggetti integrati nello spazio di Villa Giulia, storicamente ricco di codici e significati eterogenei, ci porta a maturare nuove sensazioni, dimostrando come il nostro tempo sia profondamente connesso con il passato e il futuro, magnificamente intrecciati l'uno nell'altro in un linguaggio dell'arte senza tempo.
